Strasbourg-Boston, une longue amitié
L’amitié entre Strasbourg et Boston est loin d’être nouvelle. C’est au Strasbourgeois Charles MUNCH, chef d’orchestre du Boston Symphony Orchestra entre 1949 et 1962, que l’on doit les premiers rapprochements entre sa ville natale et la capitale du Massachussetts. En 1960 le jumelage fut officiellement scellé et Boston devint ainsi la première ville jumelle de Strasbourg.
Depuis lors, les liens entre les citoyens des deux villes n’ont cessé de se renforcer. En 2010, à l’occasion du 50e anniversaire du jumelage entre les deux Villes, le Maire de Strasbourg Roland RIES et le Maire de Boston Thomas MENINO ont signé une nouvelle déclaration officielle démontrant leur volonté partagée de conforter cette coopération et d’encourager de nouveaux échanges.
Aujourd’hui, les points forts de ce partenariat s’articulent autour de trois axes :
– les universités et la recherche : particulièrement nombreux et prestigieux, ces échanges concernent en premier lieu les domaines scientifiques où des coopérations de haut niveau sont actuellement à l’œuvre. Un dispositif de bourses d’études a par ailleurs été mis en place par la Ville de Strasbourg pour soutenir la mobilité des étudiants strasbourgeois partant étudier à Boston.
– les échanges culturels et artistiques : ils se développent autour de nombreux projets tels que des concerts, des expositions, des manifestations culinaires, etc.
– la jeunesse : un échange de jeunes est organisé tous les étés alternativement dans chacune des deux villes, avec pour objectif de rapprocher les jeunes des deux villes jumelées, d’établir un véritable échange linguistique et culturel, et de leur permettre de nouer des liens d’amitié durables ; des échanges scolaires impliquent par ailleurs plusieurs établissements des deux villes.
Les échanges sont animés des deux côtés de l’Atlantique par des comités de jumelage, le Comité Boston de l’Association Alsace Etats-Unis et la Boston Strasbourg Sister City Association, en lien étroit avec les deux Villes.
En permettant à des artistes strasbourgeois et bostoniens de travailler ensemble par-delà des frontières, le projet « Par avion » s’inscrit dans le droit fil de ce jumelage placé dès l’origine sous le signe de la culture, et constitue une nouvelle preuve des liens privilégiés qu’entretiennent les deux villes.

Strasbourg-Boston, a longstanding friendship
The friendship between Strasbourg and Boston is far from recent. It is to Charles Munch, Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra between 1949 and 1962 and a native of Strasbourg, that we owe the first links between the city of his birth and the Massachusetts capital. In 1960 the twinning arrangement was given the official seal of approval and Boston became Strasbourg’s first twin city.
Since then the ties between the citizens of the two sister cities have only grown stronger. In 2010, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cities’ twinning, the Mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries, and the Mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, signed a new official declaration stating their shared desire to reinforce the cooperation between their cities and to encourage new exchanges.
Today, the partnership is expressed through strong ties in three areas in particular:
– universities and research: particularly numerous and prestigious, these exchanges mainly concern scientific fields and a number of high-level cooperative projects are currently in progress. A scholarship scheme has also been set up by the City of Strasbourg to facilitate student mobility, enabling students from Strasbourg to go to Boston to study.
– cultural and artistic exchanges: these include a wide variety of projects such as concerts, exhibitions, culinary events, etc.
– young people: an exchange scheme sees young people from Boston and Strasbourg visiting each other’s cities in alternate years, with the aim of enabling youngsters from the two sister cities to get to know each other, establishing genuine linguistic and cultural exchanges and forming lasting friendships; there are also school exchanges involving several schools in both cities.
The exchanges are organized on both sides of the Atlantic by twinning committees, the Boston Committee of the « Association Alsace Etats-Unis » and the Boston Strasbourg Sister City Association, in close cooperation with municipal authorities.
Enabling artists from Strasbourg and Boston to work together by airmail across the Atlantic, the « Par avion » project is completely in tune with the twinning scheme, which has had an important cultural element from the outset, and constitutes further proof of the special relationship the two cities enjoy.

Oser une expérience inédite, inventer une nouvelle forme d’échange culturel et artistique et ainsi enrichir les relations d’amitié et de coopération que notre ville entretient avec la Ville de Boston depuis plus de cinquante ans ; tel est le défi lancé par le projet « Par Avion », coordonné par l’artiste strasbourgeois Alain Eschenlauer et l’artiste bostonienne Ann Forbush.
Au total, cinquante artistes des deux villes ont accepté de se lancer dans cette aventure, qui réinterroge le concept même de création, en invitant deux artistes à coproduire une même œuvre et à intervenir de façon consécutive, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique.
Dès l’origine, faut-il le rappeler, le jumelage entre Boston et Strasbourg était placé sous le signe des échanges culturels et artistiques, notamment dans le domaine de la musique. En 1960, Boston, grand centre intellectuel, ville à la croisée des chemins entre le Nouveau Monde et la Vieille Europe, devint la toute première ville jumelle de Strasbourg, grâce à l’action du chef d’orchestre strasbourgeois Charles Munch qui dirigeait alors le Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Depuis cette date, des liens de confiance et d’amitié se sont noués entre associations, citoyens, artistes, musiciens, chercheurs, professeurs, étudiants et lycéens de nos deux villes, ajoutant ainsi au champ culturel, ceux de la formation, de l’université et de la recherche.
Ainsi, nos deux villes font à nouveau la preuve que le berceau de la démocratie américaine et la capitale de l’Europe des droits de l’Homme savent s’entendre, se comprendre et innover ensemble.
Car c’est bien ce qu’elles ont démontré avec ces œuvres réalisées conjointement, que le public strasbourgeois peut désormais découvrir lors de l’exposition qui se tient ici en novembre, après Boston en juin.
Merci infiniment aux artistes, dont l’œuvre est souvent l’expression d’un univers personnel et intime, qui ont accepté de respecter une règle du jeu particulièrement exigeante ! Merci aux coordonnateurs pour leur travail par-delà les océans, ainsi qu’à l’ensemble des partenaires qui ont contribué au succès d’un tel projet : le Consulat général des Etats-Unis à Strasbourg, l’association Alsace Etats-Unis et enfin, la Boston Strasbourg Sister City Association.

A daring and novel experience, the « Par Avion » project, coordinated by the Strasbourgian artist Alain Eschenlauer and the Bostonian artist Ann Forbush, invents a new form of cultural and artistic exchange, thus enriching the friendly and cooperative relations that our city has had with the city of Boston for over fifty years.
A total of fifty artists, from the two cities, accepted to take part in this adventure: it questions again the very concept of creation by inviting two artists to co-produce the same piece, and to work consecutively on each side of the Atlantic.
From the offset, we should not forget that the twinning of Boston and Strasbourg was made with a focus on cultural and artistic exchanges, in particular in the musical field. In 1960, Boston, a major intellectual centre and a city at the crossroads between the New World and Old Europe, became the first twin city of Strasbourg. The bond was forged by the efforts of the Strasbourgian conductor Charles Munch, who at that time directed the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
From this time on, ties of trust and friendship have been formed between associations, citizens, artists, musicians, researchers, teachers, students and pupils from both our cities, thus adding to the cultural field.
Our two cities have proved yet again that the cradle of American democracy and the Human Rights capital of Europe know how to get along, understand one another and innovate together. This is exactly what they have shown with these jointly made pieces; the public of Strasbourg will have the chance to view these creations at the exhibition to be held here in November, after the one in Boston in June.
Our heartfelt thanks goes to the artists, whose work is often the expression of a personal and intimate universe, who accepted to adhere to particularly demanding game rules! Thanks to the coordinators for their work crossing oceans, as well as to all the partners who contributed to the success of such a project: The Consulate General of the United States in Strasbourg, the Alsace Etats-Unis association and finally, the Boston Strasbourg Sister City Association.
I am very happy to have been able to give the support of the City of Strasbourg for this audacious initiative that strengthens the friendship between Strasbourg and Boston, and foreshadows a great future for our relations.

On entend souvent dire que l’art est par nature universel, qu’il transgresse le temps et l’espace. Ainsi, il n’est pas étonnant que le jumelage entre Strasbourg et Boston – qui dure depuis plus de cinquante ans maintenant – ait été lancé par le chef d’orchestre Charles Munch, lui qui est né à Strasbourg mais vivait à Boston. Et si les liens entre les deux villes se sont renforcés de manière aussi florissante et étroite tout au long de ces années, la coïncidence n’y est probablement pour rien. Boston n’est-elle pas l’une des villes les plus européennes d’Amérique et Strasbourg, capitale de l’Europe.
Le projet Par Avion a permis aux artistes de défier les notions de temps et d’espace. L’échange artistique a en effet eu lieu par les airs, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique. Ce projet, réelle coopération entre la France et les Etats-Unis, est aussi original qu’audacieux et totalement imprévisible. Les artistes qui y ont participé ont dû confier leurs œuvres à d’autres mains, sans connaître le résultat final. L’une des artistes du projet a décrit cela ainsi « ma création a été comme une réponse à un message trouvé dans une bouteille », un message envoyé à un inconnu lointain. Le projet Par Avion a contribué, à sa manière, à abolir les frontières, non seulement entre les Etats et les continents, mais aussi entre les artistes. Les créations des artistes représentent un vrai « melting pot » entre art et influence artistique.
Ce fut un vrai privilège pour moi d’avoir été associé à ce projet. J’attends avec impatience l’exposition de Strasbourg !

It is often said that art is universal by nature, that it defies time and space. Thus, it is no wonder that the over fifty- year-old sister city relationship between Strasbourg and Boston was first launched by a Music Director, Charles Munch, born in Strasbourg but living in Boston. And it is probably not a coincidence that the two cities have developed such a thriving and strong bond throughout the years, as Boston is often considered one of the most European cities in America and Strasbourg is the capital of Europe.
The Par Avion-project allows for artists to transcend time and space as they work via airmail across the Atlantic. This original project, a true form of cooperation between France and the United States, is very bold and completely unpredictable. The participating artists have had to entrust their creations to the hands of another, without knowing how it will turn out. One of the artists describes it as “creating a reply to a message in a bottle”-a message sent to an unknown person far away. Par Avion, in its own way, overcomes borders, not only between States and continents, but between artists as well. The creations of the artists represent a true melting pot of art and artistic influence.
It has been a great privilege to be associated with this pioneering project. I am truly looking forward to the exposition in Strasbourg!

« Par Avion »!
Y a-t-il une meilleure dénomination pour cette opération symbolique de coopération entre artistes bostoniens et artistes strasbourgeois.
L’idée est aussi inédite qu’audacieuse. S’échanger par les airs et retravailler, compléter l’œuvre d’un artiste correspondant dans l’autre ville. Tous ont accepté, ce qui n’est pas évident pour un artiste, qu’un confrère intervienne sur l’une de leur création pour aboutir à une œuvre conjointe, croisée en somme.
Le résultat est époustouflant et fera date. En attendant que le public puisse en bénéficier largement, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, à l’occasion de 2 expositions, ces œuvres sont accessibles sur deux remarquables sites dédiés.

Avec un peu de retard cette opération, qui a bénéficié d’une aide de la Ville de Strasbourg, du consulat Général des Etats-Unis d’Amérique à Strasbourg et du soutien des deux comités de jumelage, à Boston et à Strasbourg, vient couronner en quelque sorte les célébrations du 50ème anniversaire de « mariage » entre nos deux merveilleuses cités, Boston et Strasbourg.

This interactive art exchange celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Boston/Strasbourg Sister City Association. In the summer of 2011, the participating artists (25 from each city) created 16 inch x 20 inch artworks on paper. After completion, these works were collected, photographed and shipped across the Atlantic par avion.
The background art was randomly distributed to our 50 artists and they added a second layer of imagery directly on top of the first, similar to the French Surrealists’ parlor game The Exquisite Corpse. When this phase was completed, the works were returned to their country of origin, completed and exhibited.
Some pieces display a visual dialogue between strangers while others contain layers so dense that you cannot see what came before. From pure abstraction to classical nudes, this collection of artwork is filled with ingenuity, history and humor; an anthology of techniques from drawing and painting to silk screen and gold leaf.
After asking the artists to incorporate marks, materials and compositions that were foreign to their own visual vocabularies, one universal sentiment emerged: this process challenged each person to stretch artistically. Essentially, all 50 artists embraced a found object and somehow made it their own. One artist aptly said, « This project was like creating a reply to a message in a bottle. »

50 artistes et 20 dm²
Il peut être difficile pour un artiste plasticien de partager son espace de jeu graphique.
Et tout aussi difficile pour lui d’entrer dans l’espace d’un autre : questions d’intimités, de styles, de techniques et de mondes…
Aussi cet échange et ce va-et-vient entre 25 artistes bostoniens et 25 artistes strasbourgeois se partageant par deux la même surface de 20 dm² a-t-il parfois donné lieu à des étonnements.
Mais, dans tous les cas, c’est l’esprit ludique et le principe même de l’échange qui sont restés au centre de la démarche : échanges, confrontations, défis, découvertes, pirouettes…
La majorité des résultats finaux sont d’incontestables réussites plastiques et présentent un reflet fidèle de cet engagement ludique.
L’expérience fut enrichissante pour tous et mérité d’être renouvelée.
En changeant et bousculant les règles pour continuer à faire jouer et bouger les lignes…

Castonguay’s work has been exhibited at the Aberystwyth School of Art in Wales, the Lorg Fine Art Printmakers in Galway, Ireland, and the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, MA. Castonguay is a past recipient of two Massachusetts Cultural Grants from the city of Northampton, MA for organizing Interactive Intaglio and BIG INK. These sidewalk events were an opportunity for community members to interact with local artists practicing Intaglio and Relief printmaking methods. For many years, Elli Crocker’s work has explored the human relationship to the natural world – most especially the human/animal interface. Her work includes various media, but is particularly informed by drawing processes. Crocker is Professor and Program Director of Studio Art at Clark University in Worcester, MA and has been actively exhibiting her work for over 30 years. She was fortunate to receive a Sister City Travel grant to Strasbourg, France in 1985. Her work is represented by Rice/Polak Gallery in Provincetown and also may be seen at www.ellicrocker.com.

David Curcio
Themes of home, nesting, birth and death permeate the work. While a great admirer of quilts and other domestic items created by self-taught artists, Curcio’s own training in printmaking is extremely formal. Having no training in textile art, stitching and embroidery is a means through which he strives for the purity and simplicity of the self taught art he admires. He writes “In creating the current body of work, I inevitably became more comfortable with the humble, direct techniques that were at first so alien to me. In response to this growing confidence, I force myself further into deeply personal subject matter in order to stay outside of my comfort zone. At the same time I maintain a general focus on the decorative aspects of each piece in an attempt to maintain a surface-level appeal. I hope that for the viewer to whom the subject matter may hold no weight, they may impart there own meaning through the imagery, the decorative aspects of the work, and the purposefully cryptic texts and scrawl.”

Daniel Embree creates paintings and original prints of figures, drawing on personal symbols and experiences. Fascinated by the beautiful, incidental shapes of the human body, he uses gestures and dramatic poses to convey the intent and emotion of his subjects.
Embree graduated Brigham Young University with BFA in 2009. He currently lives in Newton, Massachusetts where he is pursuing a master’s degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Sa passion créatrice l’amène à la peinture.
Son oeuvre est largement marquée par cette relation à la terre – mère – nature, tantôt par un travail plus sensuel des matières et des couleurs, tantôt par un travail quasi scientifique sur le monde végétal et animal (fleurs, mollusques, insectes…).

Jesseca Ferguson has worked with pinhole photography and hand-applied 19th century photo processes since 1990. Her pinhole photographs and collaged “photo objects” have been included in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and the UK.
Ferguson lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She teaches in the Text and Image Arts department at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Elise Gessier est plasticienne, professeur d’Arts Plastiques et doctorante à l’Université de Strasbourg. Sa pratique résulte d’un détournement de déchets, de résidus, de matières et de textures usées par le temps. Ces matières particulières l’engagent dans un processus po(ï)étique qui cherche à exploiter tout le potentiel de ces abandonnés.

Aude Gilger, créature polymorphe ossillant entre dessin, sculpture et 3d, qui sévit discrétement sur les terres alsaciennes où elle a vu le jour. Diplomée d’une maîtrise d’arts plastiques et d’un master pro de modeleuse 3d jeux vidéos, son travail s’inscrit dans une démarche pluridisciplinaire hantée par le corps. Aujourd’hui, passionnée de sport, modèle vivant et graphiste free-lance, avide de nouveautés, elle ne cesse d’expérimenter de nouveaux médiums et d’inventer un nouveau langage personnel qui réunirait plusieurs arts, notamment par la performance et en multipliant les collaborations artistiques .

Born in Warsaw, Poland Ania Gilmore is a graphic designer, painter and a mixed media artist.
She works in her studio in Lexington, MA creating artist’s books, prints and paints Japanese Sumi-e.
Ania received a BFA with honors in Graphic Design from Massachusetts College of Art and Design,
studied printmaking and book arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
in Boston and at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Ania received recognition and awards
and curated shows in the United States and internationally. Her work is in private collections in Poland,
Romania, UK, Iraq and USA.

Jane Goldman formed her response to the visual world in North Texas, a landscape of intense sun, flatness, and air. She works from a combination of free association and direct observation.
Painter, printmaker, and public artist, Goldman is a partner in Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, MA. She received her BA from Smith College and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin.
Goldman has worked in Ireland, Germany, and France on fellowships, and taught extensively here and abroad. Her work is the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, the Brooklyn Museum, the Boston MFA, the Library of Congress, et. al.

Joel Janowitz has shown both nationally and internationally. Recently he exhibited at the Art Institute of Boston where he was Artist in Residence for the semester. In 2010 his work was included in the exhibition Changing Soil: Contemporary Landscape Painting at the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Nagoya, Japan.
Janowitz’s work has been collected by numerous museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Fogg Museum at Harvard.

Ronni Komarov
My work in printmaking, artist’s books and mixed media is rooted in personal narrative; family stories, scraps of conversation and fragments of everyday life. Found materials, photographs and ephemera add dimension to these stories, giving them a larger, more universal resonance. My approach is influenced by my life-long love of craft and also my years of experience in graphic design. I love typography, juxtapositions of text and image and the inherent sequence of a book’s unfolding pages. I am continually fascinated by objects found in second-hand shops. There always seems to be a mysterious past embedded in these objects. I seek to leverage this feeling in my work with found objects, combining this once again with personal narrative.

Debra Olin is a printmaker, living and working in Somerville, MA. She received her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 1980. Olin has shown in exhibitions across the U.S., Canada, Serbia, South Africa, and Cuba. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, Temple Israel, Brookline, MA, YIVO Institute, NYC, The DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. In 2004 Debra was awarded the Rappaport Prize, the largest public annual award to an individual artist in New England.

Lisa Olson is a mixed media artist and proprietor of Parula Press, a small letterpress and printmaking studio in Belmont, Massachusetts. She received a MFA from the University of Michigan School of Art in 1995. At that time her work focused on mixed media sculpture and installation, however for the past ten years an interest in using text in her work has led her to work more with paper and books. Her work can be found in collections including the University of California, San Diego and Los Angeles, Brown University, The Cleveland Institute of Art and the Boston Public Library.

PIerce’s obsession with patterns, both in nature and in the human world, is a major feature in her work.

Jan Cadman Powell is a British born artist whose career as a tutor of art and design has spanned three decades. In August 2001, she participated in the Fulbright Teachers’ Exchange Program. She moved to Winchester, Massachusetts permanently in October 2005. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Open University and a Master of Arts in Printmaking from the University of the Arts, London, UK. Jan has exhibited her work in the Greater London and Boston areas. Her work is in private collections in the United Kingdom, USA and Australia.

Sara David Ringler is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, BFA and the University of Massachusetts, South Dartmouth, MFA who focused on painting and printmaking.
“I love to investigate new processes and techniques exploring a variety of printmaking, painting and mixed media. I create monotypes or monoprints which combine with etching, woodcut or photography. In addition I often work with encaustics as a way to integrate mixed media pieces mounted on wooden panels. These panels take on a unique meaning in their object-like structure and this offers increased possibilities to layer and combine additional textures and materials.”

Michelle Samour received a Studio Diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA) in 1981, BFA Tufts/SMFA in 1975 and completed Fine Arts studies at Alfred University in 1973. Her exhibitions include: deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, MA; the Museum of Modern Art, Strasbourg, France; the Kohler Art Center, WI; the Fuller Craft Museum, MA; the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, TX and the Danforth Museum of Art, MA. She was a 2003 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship winner in Crafts and four-time finalist (’99, ’00, ‘01’ 07), a Society of Arts and Crafts New England Artist Award winner in 2004 and has received grants to study papermaking in Japan and France. She has been featured in Hand Papermaking Magazine and Fiberarts and her work is in numerous collections including Meditech Corporation, the deCordova Museum and International Paper headquarters in New York.

Liz Shepherd is a sculptor and printmaker. She frequently appropriates furniture, which she cuts up or otherwise interferes with to convey domestic disruption. She sometimes uses architectural remnants, such as doors, to construct dreamlike staircases. While natural disaster was one motivation for flying chairs and piles of objects, these images also call to mind lives that have been disrupted by events as large as war or as intimate as the upheaval that accompanies tragic illness.
Her prints merge computer generated imagery and traditional printmaking techniques producing darkly uncanny images.

Annie Silverman is a relief printmaker in Somerville, Mass. She is the proprietor of ABRAZOS PRESS, a teaching and professional studio for printmaking . She teaches classes in Artists’ Books and relief printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.She also travels and teaches workshops in Improvisational Woodcut and Mixed media printmaking nationally and internationally, most recently at Zea Mays Studio in Florence, MA , at Clo’ in County Donegal, Ireland and the Graphic Workshop in Næstved, Denmark. Her prints and books have been exhibited nationally in the US and internationally, in Japan, Denmark, and South Africa.

Currently, Stigliano is participating in Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, an international traveling exhibition of artists’ books and Correspondence: the 9th International Book Art Festival, which will travel throughout Poland. In conjunction with Handshouse Studios, Stigliano is bringing students to Zamość, Poland to paint ceiling panels for a recreation of the 17th century wooden Gwoździec Synagogue, which will be installed in the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in 2013. Stigliano is a faculty member of the Visual Arts Department of Walnut Hill School for the Arts, of Natick, MA where she teaches printmaking and book arts.

Mary Taylor creates artist’s books and prints. Her art is diverse, so is her use of materials and the processes she employs to visually express universal paradigms with earth and spirit. Taylor’s award winning works are widely exhibited and collected.
She teaches Book Art classes and Beyond the Digital Print classes at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT, at the International Center of Photography, New York, NY and in her Marshfield, MA studio. In 2008 her Beyond the Digital Print DVD was released and continues to be sold around the world.
She is a member of The Boston Printmakers, Attleboro Arts Museum, North River Arts Society & South Shore Art Center.
